Scenes from the Life of Tao Yuanming. Handscroll, ink on paper. Signature at the end of the scroll: “In the spring of the guiyou year (1273) of the zhizheng period (1341-1367), wushen (1308), painted by Zhao Zi’ang (Zhao Mengfu, 1254-1322).” One seal of the artist: “Zhao shi Zi’ang”.
From an old southern German private collection, acquired between 1970 and 2002
The scroll depicts scenes from the life of the famous Chinese poet Tao Yuanming (365-427) who left office and returned to his home to devote himself to poetry, enjoying of nature and drinking wine. It is done in the technique of pure line drawing (baimiao) with text passages between the scenes. The original composition is ascribed to the Yuan master Zhao Mengfu, style name Zi’ang, who was a master in that style. Because of the popularity of Tao Yuanming many copies were made of the painting during In the Ming and Qing dynasties and there exist different versions of it. This is a quite faithful version of the original work.
